Spencer Finch: Moon Dust

10:00am to 5:00pmBaltimore Museum of ArtBaltimore Museum of ArtBaltimore, MD 21218  FREE  Website

February 21, 2018 — October 14, 2024

Spencer Finch’s impressive light installation Moon Dust (Apollo 17), first presented at the 2009 Venice Biennale, will illuminate the BMA’s majestic Fox Court for the next seven years. The work consists of 150 individual chandeliers with 417 lights. The chandeliers are hung individually from the ceiling and form one large, cloud-like structure. Although an abstract sculpture, the installation is also a scientifically precise representation of the chemical composition of moon dust as it was gathered during the Apollo 17 mission. Finch translated the diagrams of the chemical formulas of the contained molecules by using light bulbs in different diameters and basic customary fixtures with different arm lengths to create a three-dimensional scale model of the moon’s atomic makeup. The diameter of a globe corresponds to the size of an atom and thus represents a specific element, the small globes representing helium, the bigger oxygen. The overall effect is one of science translated into visual wonderment.

Wednesday, Jun 23, 2021 at 3:00pm Online Washington, DC 20001 Free Website Five weeks of artistic ambition. Five weeks of cultural exchange. Five films. Five panel discussions. The five Nordic Embassies in the U.S., WIFT International and WIFV Washington DC are presenting a digital screening series of radiant Nordic films and fascinating panel discussions! During five weeks between February 2 and March 3, we will screen five films from across the Nordic countries, meet their directors and host five conversations with Nordic and American filmmakers. Themes range from living and creating freely to borderless filmmaking, from women who define their own reality to those making our blood boil. Meet Sundance-winner Ísold Uggadóttir, May el-Toukhy, Academy Award-contender Zaida Bergroth and Samí-director Suvi West; actresses The Bridge-lead Sofia Helin, Queen of Hearts-lead Trine Dyrholm, and many more. Every week, you will have the chance to watch a contemporary Nordic film between Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday and meet the filmmakers online for a Q&A. **The screenings will be available only in the U.S. and Canada, and Tove only in the U.S. The conversations will be open to the whole world.**
